Do Roosters Lay Eggs?
In order for an egg to form, female reproductive organs and female-specific hormones must be present. That’s why laying eggs is a feature of females, not males. However, in some cases, it is said that roosters lay eggs once every few years, although not every day or every other day like chickens. For this reason, there are questions such as does a rooster lay eggs, can roosters lay eggs, is there a female rooster, and even how much is a rooster egg among the public.
How Are Eggs Formed? Reproductive System in Chicken
Each reproductive cell in the hen’s ovary develops a yolk sac. When the yolk reaches the appropriate size, it moves out of the ovary into the funnel-shaped ovary.
Egg yolk stays in the duct of ovary for about fifteen minutes. Fertilization takes place in these fifteen minutes. If mating occurs, the sperm carrying the reproductive cell of the rooster passes through the egg yolk membrane and unites with the reproductive cell of the chicken (Thus, the egg will have the potential to create chicks. If fertilization does not occur, the egg will not suitable for incubate. These types of eggs are eggs that humans consume).
It then moves to the other part called the “magnum” to form egg whites. In Magnum, it takes up to 3 hours for egg white to form around the yolk.
Afterwards, this new formation slowly passes through the narrow channel called “isthmus” and is packaged nicely. That is, it is covered with inner and outer membranes. This process takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. The egg takes its first shape as we know it and passes to the other part to form a shell.
The egg, which has completed all its formations except for the outer shell, waits for twenty-one hours in a cloth that develops a lime shell. During this time, the gland covers the outermost surface of the egg with a hard shell. The egg is now ready to come out of the chicken.
From where the egg yolk waits for fifteen minutes to fertilize, the time required until ovulation approximately twenty-five to twenty-six hours. In other words, the egg is ovulated one day after fertilization. After the egg leaves the chicken, if it is left in a cooler environment, the development of the embryo stops. If it stays at the appropriate temperature, the development continues.
