How to Plant Onions?
Onion cultivation can be done from seed, seedling or shallot. Onion seeds mark the cheapest method of production. Growing from seed is generally preferred in production in large areas.
- The field should first be plowed at a depth of 15-20 cm. The soil should be broken up and pressed with a cultivator or harrow. Onions head diameter and quality are higher in seeds sown by coating. In this type of cultivation, there is no need for rarefy. Seeds are thrown 2-3 cm deep on average. 25-30 cm distance between the rows , 8-12 cm distance between the seeds on row is left. Germination takes almost 3-4 weeks. When grown from seed, some onions may not form heads, no matter how much care is taken.
- Seedling method is prefered for green onion and edible onion production. Seeds are first sown with 5-10 cm distance between of rows and 0.5-1 cm distance between seeds on row. When the seedlings reach almost the thickness of the pencil, they are removed and planted in the field. When planting the seedlings, the planting spacing of 5 x 25 or 5 x 30 cm is maintained. This method, which is used in small-scale cultivation, is not very economical for large areas.
- Onions with a diameter of 1-2 cm are called shallots. Shallots can be planted in the next year for dry onion production barely. Although this method is used in narrow areas, it seems far from being economical for onion cultivation in large areas.
- In order to obtain shallots, 120 to 150 cm wide, 20-25 cm long boards are prepared and the work begins. Seeds are sown on the boards by scattering or in rows. The shallots that develop in an average of 4-6 months are left on the ground for 5-10 days after they are removed from the soil. Thus, they dry in the sun and spend the winter in storage. When planting, they are planted in the field in the spring by determining 20-30 cm distance between the rows and 5 cm distance between the seeds on row. Single row, double or multi-row planting can be used.
How Often to Water Onions After Planting?
If onions are grown in a constantly moist soil, too much watering is considered harmful. Excessive irrigation adversely affects the endurance of plants. It will be sufficient to irrigate once a week until full maturity, in the period from head forming to ripening. The time between two irrigations may vary depending on the soil and climate. In the ripening phase, irrigation should not be done. Furrow irrigation, sprinkler irrigation or drip irrigation techniques can be used in onion production.
